MASTERS STUDENTS AT THE PGIS

MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMMES ARE OFFERED AT THE PGIS UNDER FOLLOWING CATEGORIES

Masters by course work (1 year) [Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) Level 9]
The ‘Masters Degree by course work’ can be obtained by completing course work only (without conducting any research project).

Master of Science (2 years) [SLQF Level 10]
In addition to the requirements for the ‘Masters Degree by course work’, the ‘Masters of Science Degree’ requires a research project of one year duration. The minimum duration of the entire programme shall be 24 months.

Postgraduate Diploma (1 year) [SLQF Level 8]
The postgraduate Diploma programme in Science Education is of 12 months duration and consists of only taught courses.

Most programmes are conducted generally during week-ends.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Surveying or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized university, acceptable to the PGIS.
Those who are awaiting the results of their final degree examinations may also apply if the effective date of the basic degree falls before the closing date.

MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMMES SCHEDULED TO COMMENCE IN MAY/JUNE 2024

The deadline for the receipt of applications for Masters programmes listed below is 20th September 2025.
The programme fee can be paid in full or in four installments (1st installment at the registration, 2nd installment after 4 months from the date of registration, 3rd installment after 8 months from the date of registration and 4th installment after 11 months from the date of registration).


This programme provides an adequate coverage of basic statistical theory, applications in design of experiments and surveys, data analysis and methods of presentation and interpretation of results. At the completion of the programme, the candidate will be able to fit in as an applied statistician in a research institute, planning institute or other state or private sector institute.

The programme is designed to provide the geologists, engineers and other scientists a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of engineering, geological and hydrogeological principles. In Sri Lanka, at present, there is a growing need to improve infrastructure facilities with particular reference to construction of buildings, roads, railways, bridges, sub-way tunnels, overpasses, etc., and to develop energy and water resources to meet the requirements of an increasing population. It is important to emphasize that these goals could be achieved only by those having a sound knowledge of geological principles and their applications to civil engineering practices. This programme will be conducted jointly with the Department of Geology and the Department of Civil Engineering.

This Masters programme trains professionals in the exploitation and processing of precious materials and industrial menerals in Sri Lanka through selection, design, recognition, technical analysis and acquisition. The programme provides an advanced knowledge in the natural processes pertaining to the formation of gems or minerals /precious stones / semiprecious stones and quantification of mineral resources industry.

This M.Sc. programme is uniquely designed to train students from a range of disciplines - physical and biological sciences, geography, engineering, medicine, veterinary science, agriculture, management, IT/ICT, architecture, social sciences, surveying, defense, etc. The programme will give an all-round knowledge of GIS, Remote Sensing and GPS, and will also cover current technological developments in those areas. It is designed to produce high quality graduates who will be able to solve local, regional and global problems using GIS and Remote Sensing. Visiting experts from foreign countries conduct several course modules both locally and abroad.

The programme emphasizes on developing mathematical models, finding solutions, and interpreting the results for real-world problems that arises in industrial-related settings. The programme is designed to provide graduates with an adequate, cutting-edge knowledge in mathematics with an emphasis in statistics, operations research, and scientific computing. This programme prepares the candidates for careers in private and public sectors as well as provides the opportunity in progressing into academic research.

The Master's degree programme in Medical Microbiology is a multi-disciplinary academic and research course which includes microbiological diagnosis of human diseases, diagnosis and identification of microorganisms in the laboratory, and interpretation of laboratory reports. It is conducted with the participation of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, Teaching Hospital - Peradeniya, and other health institutes. This programme will benefit those who are already working in the field of microbiology or those intending to pursue careers in medical microbiology, public health, diagnostics, and research

Molecular Biology and Biotechnology are innovative science which overlap with Biology, Chemistry, Genetic and Biochemistry and play imperative roles in many fields including medicine, agriculture environmental Management and various other value driven industries. The Masters programme focuses on developing molecular biologists and biotechnologists with evaluative, innovative and creative capabilities. After successful completion of this programme the students should be able to demonstrate a good working knowledge in molecular biology and biotechnology to show the highest level of competency in analytical techniques, methodology, upkeep and use of instruments , understand the biological systems and their interactions with the environment at molecular level functions in an administrative, supervisory and advisory capacity and to work as team members with personnel in other related fields. Classes are conducted generally during weekends.

Masters programme in Pharmaceutical Botany will provide effective knowledge on plant species with pharmaceutical importance and their usage, and train students towards development of new commercial pharmaceutical products through innovative research and to disseminate recent advancements in pharmaceutical industry with hands on experience.

The programme is designed especially for science teachers and educationists and for those who could contribute to the development of science education in Sri Lanka. The programme consists of a professional general component of Science Education, and a special component from one of the four subject areas: Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Mathematics Education and Physics Education. In addition, practicals, a research project and a seminar in the special component are also included in the programme. State-of-the-art activity-based and interactive methods of teaching forms a significant part of training. Classes are conducted throughout the week.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applications can be submitted ONLINE via the "APPLY ONLINE" link available under decription of each Masters Degree Programme above.
The completed application forms should include a processing fee of Rs. 2000/-.


Please handover / post the generated application together with all the attachments to Assistant Registrar/PGIS (Postgraduate Institute of Science, P.O. Box 25, Peradeniya).

Mode of Payment of Processing Fee (Rs. 2000/-):

(i)  All students are strongly encouraged to make the online payment by following the link https://ipg.pgis.lk/.   Mention the “Order ID” in the      application when required ( ‘Order ID’ will be displayed on the Payment Receipt Page upon successful payment).

(ii) Do not make the payment through CDM (Cash Deposit Machines).

(iii) Cash payments are only accepted at the shroff counter /PGIS. Please upload a scanned copy of the payment slip to the application.

(iv) If you make the payments over the bank counter, upload a scanned copy of the payment slip to the application. Ensure to write your Name, Registration Number (if applicable), and MSc Programme in the bank payment slip.
